The 8 Best Hospitality Trends at BDNY 2015

BDNY hospitality trends

The 2015 Boutique Design New York (BDNY) Trade Fair featured an incredible array of inspiration and insight into some of the biggest trends sweeping the hospitality industry. If you weren’t fortunate enough to be in attendance for this year’s event, Parterre Flooring Systems has you covered.

The multi-day trade show featured not only Parterre’s collection of luxury vinyl flooring; it also showcased some eye opening snapshots into some of the newest and upcoming trends in the hospitality industry. Interior design vendors and furnishing supply companies wowed attendees with the many furnishings, lighting, fabrics, wall coverings, flooring, carpeting, bath and spa, accessories, artwork and more.

Here are 8 of the hottest hospitality trends found at BDNY 2015:

1. Masculinity Gaining Momentum

Textiles and fabrics typically reserved for the likes of a female audience are now gaining inspiration from menswear such as Houndstooth pattern and other, more masculine fabrics like wools, tweeds and linens.

Layers of grays and blacks were a common theme among fabric vendors—indicating masculinity is growing in stretch as a trend in the hospitality industry these days.

In addition to the fabrics and textiles, the growing trend in masculinity also appeared to find itself within many contractor booths—such as a hotel room setting designed by Uhuru adorned in mostly all black fabrics with a whiskey bottle resting right on top of a white linen clad bed.

2. Jewel Tones Taking Over

Jewel tones—such as emerald greens, fuchsias, sharp blues and deep purples—appeared in a variety of places, most notably within fabrics and textiles.

3. Wood is Still Winning

The natural look of wood remains a heavy hitter when it comes to trends in the hospitality industry—especially when it comes to furnishings, finishes, flooring, or in lighting like wall sconces.

Wood not only appeals to the more masculine type, but the warmth of wood also appeals to someone with a softer side due to its home-like appeal. Notably, the wood trend was found in furniture designs as well as accessories like simple tabletop décor or accessories for the bathroom.

The wood look is also very popular in flooring; especially the many design options featured in our InGrained and Vertu collections.

4. Compact Living Keeps it Simple

Minimalistic living was a huge hit at this year’s show. Tiny spaces, similar to the latest craze in micro apartments, were on display from a handful of display contractors. Whether it was bunk beds, a small desk that turns into a 10-person conference table, or a wardrobe that opens up into a bathroom vanity, the compact living concept appears to be gaining in popularity.

“When compared to the average hotel room, suites designed with multifunctional furniture appeal to a wider range of guests. By accommodating different combinations of guests in one room type rather than designing multiple room types, hotels can increase their overall occupancy rates. Our furniture offers flexibility without sacrificing comfort and hospitality.”

5. Wall Patterns Beginning to Wow

Wall patterns, both in floral and abstract designs, are becoming hugely sought after in the hospitality industry. This trend is making a massive impact on the overall approach to interior design these days, as designers are beginning to think about more than just flooring, furnishing and finishes and are now concentrating on what to do with the walls.

In particular, the wood trend on walls is becoming more and more popular within the hospitality industry—take for example the Autumn Apple wall design we featured at this year’s show. This flooring design is part of Parterre’s InGrained collection.

6. Lighting Creates Long-lasting Comfort

Lighting is easily one of the most important and longstanding trends in the hospitality industry. This is because the lighting featured in a space dictates the experience and therefore can mean the difference between creating an intimate atmosphere or one to avoid altogether. Growing trends in lighting design involve approaches focused on industrial, vintage and modern.

“What is capturing my focus now is the notion of organic sculptural forms expressed with new technologies.  I am thinking of lighting less as single fixtures and more as decorative architectural systems that illuminate a space in waves of sculptural forms.”

7. Fine Looking Furniture

Modern and clean furniture lines could be found all throughout this year’s show. Sleek and sharp, the furniture on display struck a fine balance between minimalistic and luxurious—which in turn appeals to the more modern and stylistic.

8. Accessories are Everything

Even the prettiest floors, walls and furniture deserve the right accessories. This year’s trend in accessories appeared to be focused around natural colors such as quartz, gold and other tones of cut stone. Bathroom accessories, such as soap dishes, made for the perfect finishing touch in many of the concept spaces on display. Artistic accessories also stood out, helping each space pop.

“Our customizable, American-maker Zinc, wood and metal tables, shelving, fixtures and wall art are a natural expansion of our brand as our customers look to collaborate in the design and function of the purchases for their hospitality projects. These products were very well received.

Also eye catching were our customizable lamps and pendants in concrete and brass along with exciting Regina Andrew accessories such as trays and objects in crystal and metal.”

While the above hospitality trends made quite the impression throughout BDNY 2015, the team at Parterre thoroughly enjoyed showing attendees all of the latest ideas and inspiration into luxury vinyl flooring. These days, more and more hotels and restaurants are moving away from carpet and ceramics after learning about the value LVT provides in terms of versatility and durability. Judging from the feedback, it appears that LVT is continuing to catch on as a trend in the hospitality industry.
